About Passerelles de justice réparatrice

Creating bridges of dialogue, listening, and recognition for 25 years!

Formerly known as the Centre de services de justice réparatrice (CSJR), Passerelles de justice réparatrice (which translates to Bridges to Restorative Justice) has been rooted for a quarter of a century in a humanistic vision of justice, attentive to individuals, relationships, and communities. Our mission is to create bridges for expression, listening, and sharing where bonds have been broken.

History

From Genesis to Today

Marking its 20th anniversary in 2021, the Centre de services de justice réparatrice (CSJR) brought together David Shantz, Thérèse de Villette, and Raoul Lincourt, who have been present from the organization's very first steps to today. Discover the story of our origins, the impulses that led to the creation of the organization, and the deep needs of our community that we have been answering for a quarter of a century.

The initial spark: hearing the other half of the story

“I could only hear half the story”. By becoming aware of this reality, David Shantz, who was a prison chaplain, decided to build on existing initiatives developed in Ontario to organize the first victim-offender encounters in Québec's penitentiaries. This started twenty years ago.

Ten years later, he met Thérèse de Villette who had just been the secondary victim of a murder. After gaining awareness of restorative justice's benefits, she began implementing this approach in her own life.

The power of a shared vision and the birth of the Center

Around the same time, David and Thérèse met Mario Marchant, who had just finished a course on restorative justice at Eastern Mennonite University (USA). After organizing a few victim-offender encounters together, Thérèse and Mario saw the need to create a center to promote restorative justice and respond to the needs of victims, offenders, and the community.

David, Thérèse, and Mario, along with a few other pioneers (Raoul Lincourt, Gilles David), then created the Centre de services de justice réparatrice, which was recognized on September 11, 2001.
